Paul Cabuts

Paul Cabuts works in the evolving field of documentary photography, his practice is grounded in the Valleys of south Wales in the UK. He was initially motivated by the differences between his personal experiences of the living and working in the Valleys, and the way in which they had been represented in photography and other media.

“The contradictions and complexities I encountered in making photographs led me to develop a practice that engages in both picture making and research. My photographic work offers me the opportunity to explore the culture and physicality of a region that had previously been interrogated by a number of renowned international photographers. Through research into their work it has been possible to build an understanding of their imperatives, and to reveal the differing forces shaping their output. My work offers a contrapuntal response to what, in relation to the south Wales Valleys, became the established modes of photographic representation.”
